Cork stoppers at the base. Translated as "lion", but can also refer to a dog, with magical powers and the ability to repel evil spirits. A pair of shishi traditionally mount guards outside the gates of Shinto temples and Buddhist temples (although temples are more often guarded by Nio protectors).
