VINTAGE PARROT SALT AND PEPPER SHAKERS FROM THE PAPAGAYO ROOM IN THE FAIRMONT HOTEL IN SAN FRANCISCO. Al William's" with a paper label "JAPAN" Marked on underside: "IMPORTED BY Al Williams. DIMENSIONS: 4-3/4" overall height x 2" overall width.

CONDITION: Excellent overall vintage condition. Slight loss to orange decoration on crown of one parrot (see photo). PROVENANCE: Mood Indigo, New York, NY. Al Williams and his wife, Katharine Hyde Williams, opened the legendary Papagayo Room in the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco in 1945. Movie stars, politicians, dignitaries, as well as ordinary people regularly coexisted in Al and Katharine Williams' wildly popular restaurant until its closing in 1961. Nelson Rockefeller has been credited in encouraging them to open the Papagayo Room. Notable diners from the entertainment industry included Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Mae West, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole and Marilyn Monroe. Katharine Williams always said that her husband's outgoing personality and knowledge of Mexican cooking, which he learned from his mother, for the restaurant's success.
